Meet Our December Warrior of the Month: Alethea Hutchison

Meet Our December Warrior of the Month:
Alethia Hutchison

In a month themed “Gifts”, we are pleased to introduce you to Alethea Hutchison. She came to our studio through an invitation to a Restorative Workshop. That was enough to turn her into a part of our community!

Tell us a little about yourself and what brought you to Abundant Yoga.

Two years ago, I was in a rut with my exercise routine. I also deal regularly with anxiety, and did see that yoga helped me alleviate it. I put my faith into my yoga personally but didn’t know there were classes that led in that way! I used to take Keleah’s classes at the YMCA but wasn’t aware that she had opened a studio. I began to pray about all of it, and a few days later, Kristee Dickson gifted me with a “Be Still” restorative class at what was then Beyond Yoga. I don’t know why, but it always amazes me how God puts things together! It surprised me that God cares about my exercise routine, but the truth is, what God really cares about is me, so of course He would want to bless me through the gift of exercise.

In a recent aerial class, Keleah’s message was on the beauty of giving without the intention to receive. When we give out of an honest motivation to bless, what we are really doing is acting in obedience. I’m sure Kristee had no idea what a blessing the gift of a yoga class would be to me. Now, rather than exercise simply being part of my routine, I think it’s a daily gift that I give to myself. Carving out an hour several times a week to be alone on the mat with my Savior has been a blessing both physically and spiritually. Not only is it a gift, it’s truly an answer to prayer.

Tell us about your experience with Aerial Yoga.

I’ve been excited about taking Aerial classes since Keleah moved into this space and I saw the hooks hanging from the ceiling! When people say, “Let go and let God”, I think Aerial is an excellent representation of that. Not only is it a mental release of control, but it gives me a physical release—especially in my hips and back—that I can’t get on the floor. It’s almost like I have to take everything God has taught me on the mat about trusting Him, and then actually put it into action. It’s a completely challenging, but absolutely freeing, experience.

What is your favorite yoga pose and why?

I have a love/hate relationship with Pigeon. I love the challenge, but I hate the pose because my hips are so tight. I think I will be working on that pose for the rest of my life, but I love that I feel progress each time.

Abundant Yoga believes we are a studio that offers more than yoga. How have you seen this to be true?

Abundant Yoga is one of the brightest spots in my day. It’s not just a place to exercise, it’s a community. And it’s not just a community…but a community of believers. Abundant Yoga is a holy place where I truly feel God alive and at work.

Which classes do you regularly attend?

I am a regular in the morning Gentle classes, as well as the morning Aerial classes, and I throw in a Powerful class once a week for good measure.

Is there anything else you would like to share about your experience at Abundant Yoga?

What’s wonderful about yoga is that literally anyone can do it, and Abundant Yoga is awesome about making beginners feel confident and encouraged.

Do you have a favorite Bible Verse you would like to share?

Because yoga is the quietest space in my day, it’s where I hear God’s voice the most audibly. So, 1 Kings 19:11-12 often comes to mind: “The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.”
